Dory Moments

I just watched Finding Nemo, again. I love that movie, for several reasons. First off, it’s just plane funny, secondly, it reminds me of my mom.

My mom passed away a few years back, in her last year of life she was with us mentally, but sometimes she had what we called “Dory” moments. You know, she was the fish who had short term memory. Well that was my mom, but not only was it short term memory it was also confused memories. It made for some very interesting and yes, funny conversations. My mom new she was confusing things, or forgetting things, and until the end, she played it up as much as we did. That is why I love Finding Nemo, it brings back happy memories. It brings back my mom, if only for 100 minutes.

We all have memories like that, triggers that set off a set of emotions, Finding Nemo make me happy, but Finding Neverland makes me sad, and I love both movies for the same reason, they both remind me of my Mom.

Jesus used stories a lot, he was always telling them, and I am sure there a few that never made it to the pages of our bibles. Some of them may have been repetitive, or even uneventful. But I would venture to guess that a few of them where just too meaningful to the writes, that they could not write them without evoking deep emotions. The writes of the bible where human after all, and I can see them fighting an internal battle debating whether they should include this story or not, yes God is the Devine writer, but he allows humans freewill.

Emotions are a funny thing, they creep up when we least expect them to and they can and do control us, and in some ways they should.

I would imagine that the writes of the Passion where deeply troubled as to how much detail was truly needed. To write, in full detail, the events that took place would place a deep stress on the writer. The emotions would be fresh, and they would run deep in the soul. But to leave out the details would be to deny the act itself. The question would have been one that I personally would discern for some time.  So would the gospel writers, the writing of the bible was not a automatic action, but one that took time and it’s of energy on the part of the writes. Emotions had to be conveyed in the words on a page, not an easy task.

If Jesus had filming available to Him, we would be able to see the emotions and acts as they took place. But we would lose the human touch, the personal side of the events.  It is the struggle of the writes, the passion of the faith and the deep conviction and emotion that fills the gospels and the whole bible with passion and truth. They draw for us memories of events that we did not witness, yet at the same time they relate to events we have, allowing us to create bridges between the events of Jesus to our world.

And I have to believe that even Jesus had “Dory” moments, moments that he and his friends treasured, and where talked about for years after his death. How sad they never made it in to the bible, for what is more human then forgetting what just took place, or what you where talking about. It is the “Dory” moments that I miss the most from the last  year of my Mom’s life, they where the moments where we saw her smile and laugh, they where the moments that made her real, and the moments that still make me smile today.
