Spring Cleaning: A Leadership skill

Spring is a time for cleaning, you know, Spring Cleaning…

- Yard work

- All the closets in the house

- The Garage

- The Windows

- The Walls

Every surface and every corner gets a good deep cleaning, places you haven’t looked at all winter and now you are obligated to, for Spring Cleaning is a passage, a passage from the bleak dark days of winter in to the glory of spring and all she offers. The new growth, the smells and the sun. Yep, spring cleaning is as much apart of spring as Halloween is of autumn. And for the most part, we look forward to spring cleaning because we understand the importance of it. Not just the simple fact that we are clearing out the dust of the past 8 months, but there is more to it, it goes deeper than just that. There is something about it, something that seems to touch our deepest being.

How do I know this, just look at that facts, a quick search on Amazon for books on spring cleaning and I get 2201 hits, and a Google search returns about 112,000,000 hits…. Now tell me that people don’t feel a deep need to clear out the dust and cobwebs once per year, starting off fresh and new.

Now, I offer you Spring Cleaning: A Leadership Skill, a skill that every leader or want-to-be leader needs in their tool box. So what is it, what exactly is Spring Cleaning for Leaders? Well it’s not cleaning out the old corner office nor is it having all the workers clean up the work place. It’s not a fresh paint job, although all those things should be done from time to time. But that’s not leadership, that’s cleanliness.

Spring Cleaning Leadership has more to do with the person than the possessions. It’s a time for a leader to stop and look deep into the corners of their minds, to scrub every surface of their hearts and to open up the windows of their souls and let the fresh air in, once again.

Cleaning the deep corners of the mind

This is a perfect time to look at your deeply held thoughts and beliefs, a time to reevaluate your long-standing positions and to seek out new ways to approach issues, people and life. Lets say that you have always held the position that your job, as a leader, has always been one of dictatorship, that you give orders and they follow. And lets say that it has worked for you, that over the years people have always said that you’re a dictator, but you always get the job done right and on time. Over all, not a bad record. The job is done and on time and as a bonus, it was done right the first times.

So your thinking, great, this leader can skip the first step, they have no room for change or improvement. Why mess with what works… As the old saying goes, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

But lets look at it anyway, lets pretend…

So what would the leader have to look at, what corner of the heart needs fixin’? Well, a lot of the depends on what the leader considers important in their life. Is the only goal to complete the task or do they see more? Do they see personal development of their people as important? Or is it just get the job done, do what you have always done, the same way you always have, we have a proven method that has worked for years and years and will continue to work for years to come. We are like a well oiled machine, no monkey wrenches needed.

Sure, the job will get done, and sure it will be right the first time, but are we missing something that may have improved it, something that may have saves time, effort or money? Maybe that person you hired to do job “X” had a new idea that would have save time and effort for the person doing job “Z”… Or maybe the person doing job “X” would be better at job “Z”… the possibilities are endless, yet we will never know them if we hold true to our deepest convictions that this is the way its done, always has been and always will be…

Even the best leaders can get caught in the trap of familiarity. So spring is a perfect time to re-examine your methods.. Are they really the best way or just the known way?

Scrubbing every surface of the heart

Leaders, true leaders are servants, and must have a servant’s heart. This is a fact, not just a nice saying. Someone can be the boss and call themselves a leader, but if they do not have a servant’s heart they are nothing more than a boss. And truth be told, anyone can be a boss, its really not to hard to “boss” people around. But a leader, a true leader, they are few and far between, leaders grow into true leadership, it is rare to find a natural servant leader, it is more often than not that the person worked long and hard scrubbing the surfaces of their heart before anyone would truly call them a servant leader. So what exactly is scrubbing of the heart, and how does one do so?

We all have dark places with in our heart, places where we hold deep grudges or prejudices. Places within our hearts where the light of servanthood cannot and does not shine. Places that even we fear to go. It is exactly those places that we must scrub. But how? How does one scrub the deep dark places of the heart…

Work, lots and lots of work… Prayer and humility are the best places to begin.

Lets look at the example from above, the same leader who got the job done on time and right every time. Once again, not a bad thing, and lets say that over all they are open-minded to new and different approaches… So, so far a good leader, they allow people of offer new ways of doing things, and allow people to try new and different jobs, if time allows for it and the circumstances are appropriate.

That’s a good over all rule, one would not want to risk messing up on a major project, sometimes the old ways are the best ways. But if the job is less risky and time permits, it makes sense to allow a little experimentation to take place.

But now lets say that such a job was taking place, a job that allows for this. Perfect… So worker “A” wants to try their hand at something new, they ask for the opportunity and its granted… Perfect… so far… worker “B” also asks to try their hand at something new, but this time is denied. Now lets say that both workers have the same level of experience and time on the job, that both workers are qualified to do the tasks at hand, but for some unknown reason, worker “B” is denied.

The leader gave a reason, something along the line of, we just can’t afford to put you on that job, you are needed here. Sounds good, in fact it sounds like a complement. Sounds like you are so valuable to the task at hand tat we can not afford to risk losing you to the other job.

Here is where the leader must stop and look deep within… Is that the real reason or is there a deeper darker reason. Is it because the person is no the same-sex, age, race or religion as they are? Is it because once, many moons ago they did or said something that you found hurtful or offensive, or maybe once, in the distance past, they messed up a job, and you had to take the blame for it… There can be millions of reasons why… But none are valid.

It is time to scrub the heart, to remove the old hurts and hate and to replace it with understanding and forgiveness. You may not like that person very much, on a personal basis, but that should have no bearing on the job at hand. If they can do the work and do it to the standards that everyone else on the team must meet, than they should be given the opportunity, to succeed or fail, the same as anyone else.

But change does  not happen over night, it is a long and hard process, one that needs to be worked on little by little… The first step is for the leader to recognize that there heart needs a good spring cleaning, the second step, list the dirty spots down, know what needs to be scrubbed away. And the lest step, start cleaning, pick one dirty spot, clean it and then move on to the next. Just like cleaning the walls of your house, you don’t move around randomly from wall to wall, spot to spot… You pick one wall to start on and clean it before moving on to the next.

Open up the windows of the soul to let the fresh air in

Leadership, authentic leadership, is a relationship with yourself and others, the group and individual. Leadership is never in a void or vacuüm, it is always in the eye of the storm, and this is where we will discover the soul of any great leader.

The image  of the eye of the storm is a strong image, one that invokes many other images, such as power and calmness, force and anti-force. Any great leader will tell you that is with in the storm that leaders are often times born. The forces that play upon the soul of such a person do not destroy them, but rather they ignites within them the sleeping giant that waits to be awaken.

We have all witnessed such leadership, think of times in your life when just the right person steps forward to take control, think of times of tragedy or strife, times of chaos and confusion.

Leaders seem to always emerge from such things. It is the soul that moves them into action. It was the winds of change and chaos that propelled them into the eye of the storm. They opened up the windows within their souls and allowed the wind to blow thru and into their soul. Leaders not by choice but by baptism, baptism of fire.

I could go back to the example I used above, but to  me, it seems it would cheapen the soul to do so. This spring cleaning project stands on its own…

Not every great leader was born of the eye of the storm, but every great leader must walk into that very same eye, and the only way to do so is to open your windows…

So what are the windows of the soul? and how does one open them…?

The eyes are said to be the windows of our souls, and I, for one believe this to be. How often have I heard the phrase, look me in the eyes when you are talking to me… and how often I have said the same… But why… Why is it so important to look into the eyes…

Because we all seem to see something more than just the eyes, we all seem to see deeper…

Leaders need to work with open eyes, nit just eyes that see the task at hand, but eyes the seem to see the underlying current of their team, eyes that can see the slight difference in a persons face or eyes that notice the off color of a persons personality. Eyes that are open to see the colors of the world, even in the darkness of it.

Leaders do not need to be told what is going on, they should be able to perceive it from not what there eyes see but rather from what there eyes tell them. Leaders learn to listen to there eyes (souls) rather then to see with them. The windows of the soul are the eyes that are open, that see the path that leads in the storm, if that is necessary, and out of the storm, if that is required. Leaders think not of the safe exit of themselves, but of the team whom they lead. And the soul, if allowed to do so, will lead them into the storm or around the storm, but it will never avoid the storm.

So how do we open our windows, and allow the fresh air in? We allow the eyes to do the souls bidding, we allow the winds to guide us. But to do this we need to first learn how to open the windows… How to feel the wind upon our soul and how to freely go wear the wind directs.

We have to practice observation, we need to learn to see the tree with in the forest and the breeze upon the leaf. In the office this means seeing everyone as a person, not just a worker, at home this means seeing family members as individuals and not a collective and in the community at large it means seeing each member of the community as a individual being.

For example, how many times have you ever been compared to others, such as, When so-and-so did this job, they did it this way… In the eyes of that person, you are not an individual, but rather part of the collective, many of the one, rather than one of the many. In larger companies this seems to be, more often than not, the case. How often people say, I feel just like a number to them, not a person”. The eyes of the corporation are closed and has no soul. But leaders to, if there eyes are open.

Experiment, learn to see things differently, try to notice one new thing in your office/home/school/community each day, teach your eyes to see deeper and allow your soul to take you… Pray and be still, be open to hear the soul and allow the moment to take you… Like any other skill, this takes practice…

And in the End…

Like anything in life, hard work and dedication to the task at hand is paramount in completing the task, the same can be said for leadership and change. The opportunity to do a little “Spring Cleaning” is an opportunity to start fresh… no examine your life, your leadership and to make changes for the better,

God Bless

The Three Types of Change

word-cloud-change

All change is not growth, as all movement is not forward.

Ellen Glasgow

Being interested in and involved in the “Change” industry, I found this quote to be dead on, All too often we tend to think that if we are changing, it must be a positive thing, that we must be growing is some manner. Nothing could be further from the truth. Some change is neutral, you neither move forward nor back, your just stand still. Yet other changes seems to be more positive, we move forward, all-be-it, sometimes a little too slow for our liking, but it’s still a move forward. Change can also move us backwards, much to our dismay.

Let us look at each type of change and discover its potential:

Neutral Change:

The process of non-change, as it where, in the natural state we are neither moving forward nor back, we are just there. This state of being, I would venture, is the most common state. The state of contentment or resignation, we neither desire to change or do not possess the motivation to enact the steps necessary to change. In this state there is no complaining about your current state, but it does not mean you are satisfied with your current life, you may be, but you may also be just resigned to the fact that this is your life. This state can be a sort of sloth, a laziness or true contentment.

Forward Change:

This change is what most people would consider a positive change, a change that is moving you from one state to a new state. This is true, in a forward state you are moving in a new direction. However, the move may or may not be a positive move. For example, you may decide that you wish to advance your situation at work, to become a manager. To help you achieve this goal you start to read books on leadership and management. However, in your search for the right books, you are given bad advice and read books that teach you skills that cause you to back stab and claw your way to the top. You have now moved in a new direction, but that direction is not positive. It is not life affirming it is a direction that may get you that management position, but along the way you have destroyed yourself, and your relationships. Forward change is not always positive; we must pay close attention to how we go about achieving the change we desire.

Backward Change:

Using the example from above, you have now achieved your goal, you are a manager. Yet along the way you backstabbed many friends and you have neglected your relationships. Your life, simple, is a wreck. You have seen your failures, and no longer wish to remain the person you have become. You desire change. At this junction you have three choices. 1. Stay the course; learn to live with what you are. (Neutral) 2. Move forward, correction the misguided choices of the past. 3. Return back; Undo the changes to return to your former self.

This third choice, to move back, sounds like a retreat that you are giving up. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Ask any good General, and they will tell you that you need to know when to retreat. That a well-timed retreat can mean the difference between victory and defeat.

There are times in all our lives that we need to return to our past. Times that we must go back in order to truly move forward. In the example above, you may decide that returning to the “old” you bay be the best starting point to move forward to the “new” you. Especially if you never felt comfortable in the “current” you, you just created. Retreating to safety, back behind the lines, does not mean you are giving up the ground you have taken. Returning to the old you doesn’t mean you give up your new management position. However, it does mean that you must reevaluate your current position and decide if it fits into your new tactical plan.

Change is not a single war to be won, it is many battles, some are victories others are defeats and some are draws. Nevertheless, each battle is a part of the overall war. Only in war can an army lose most of the battles, yet still win the war. We must learn to choose our battles, to plan our attach and our retreats. Learn to be content with a draw and retreat as we are with a victory.

Recommended Reading:

Each of the four books looks at change and life. The first two are historical in nature, but offer lessons that we all should learn. I have read each book, learned life lessons and gained insight in to myself and the world around me. Each book will teach you about the three types of changes and the power of each. Happy reading!

Killing Lincoln

By: Bill O`Reilly

Publication Date: September 27, 2011

killing

A riveting historical narrative of the heart-stopping events surrounding the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, and the first work of history from mega-bestselling author Bill O’Reilly

The anchor of The O’Reilly Factor recounts one of the most dramatic stories in American history—how one gunshot changed the country forever. In the spring of 1865, the bloody saga of America’s Civil War finally comes to an end after a series of increasingly harrowing battles. President Abraham Lincoln‘s generous terms for Robert E. Lee‘s surrender are devised to fulfill Lincoln’s dream of healing a divided nation, with the former Confederates allowed to reintegrate into American society. But one man and his band of murderous accomplices, perhaps reaching into the highest ranks of the U.S. government, are not appeased.

In the midst of the patriotic celebrations in Washington D.C., John Wilkes Booth—charismatic ladies’ man and impenitent racist—murders Abraham Lincoln at Ford’s Theatre. A furious manhunt ensues and Booth immediately becomes the country’s most wanted fugitive. Lafayette C. Baker, a smart but shifty New York detective and former Union spy, unravels the string of clues leading to Booth, while federal forces track his accomplices. The thrilling chase ends in a fiery shootout and a series of court-ordered executions—including that of the first woman ever executed by the U.S. government, Mary Surratt. Featuring some of history’s most remarkable figures, vivid detail, and page-turning action, Killing Lincoln is history that reads like a thriller.

Being George Washington

By: Glenn Beck

Publication Date: November 22, 2011

george

IF YOU THINK YOU KNOW GEORGE WASHINGTON, THINK AGAIN.

This is the amazing true story of a real-life superhero who wore no cape and possessed no special powers—yet changed the world forever. It’s a story about a man whose life reads as if it were torn from the pages of an action novel: Bullet holes through his clothing. Horses shot out from under him. Unimaginable hardship. Disease. Heroism. Spies and double-agents. And, of course, the unmistakable hand of Divine Providence that guided it all.

Being George Washington is a whole new way to look at history. You won’t simply read about the awful winter spent at Valley Forge—you’ll live it right alongside Washington. You’ll be on the boat with him crossing the Delaware, in the trenches with him at Yorktown, and standing next to him at the Constitutional Convention as a new republic is finally born.

Through these stories you’ll not only learn our real history (and how it applies to today), you’ll also see how the media and others have distorted our view of it. It’s ironic that the best-known fact about George Washington—that he chopped down a cherry tree—is a complete lie. It’s even more ironic when you consider that a lie was thought necessary to prove he could not tell one.

For all of his heroism and triumphs, Washington’s single greatest accomplishment was the man he created in the process: courageous and principled, fair and just, respectful to all. But he was also something else: flawed.

It’s those flaws that should give us hope for today. After all, if Washington had been perfect, then there would be no way to build another one. That’s why this book is not just about being George Washington in 1776, it’s about the struggle to be him every single day of our lives. Understanding the way he turned himself from an uneducated farmer into the Indispensable (yet imperfect) Man, is the only way to build a new generation of George Washington’s that can take on the extraordinary challenges that America is once again facing.

Rest: A Lenten Reflection

In a world that is always on the run, were each moment is scheduled and every activity planned the word rest can seem a bit odd. How often have I heard people so, I have no time for rest, too much to do, too many places to go. It is a common response, sad to say, that people just do not find it very important to find time to rest.

Rest in me, take refuge in my arms, relax and breathe of new life. This is what the Lord is saying to us all, it is a commandment, keep hole the Sabbath, God himself rested on the seventh day and Jesus often found time to go off and rest in His Fathers loving arms. Yes, we cannot seem to find the time. Odd, don’t you think, that the creator of all can find time to rest, yet we cannot.

Jesus often times would go off by Himself to pray, to rest, He understood the importance of quiet time to Himself, time to reenergize his spirit with a little conversation with His Father. Conversation that sometimes meant just being in God’s presence, no words, no actions, just resting in Him.

I have been thinking a lot about resting as of late. Work has been hectic and family life has been a tab bit stressful, and the word “REST” has been calling to me. My mind has been calling up the word tired whenever anyone asks how I am. Tired, just tired. Tired of work, tired of winter, tired of family, tired of being tired.

Rest, relaxation, meditation and contemplation, that is the remedy for tired. Lent offers us the opportunity to “schedule” that into our daily lives. Nightly reading from the bible, quiet prayer time, retreats and other Lenten activities that call us to quiet ourselves and to let the soft voice of God whisper into our hearts. Rest in me and you shall find peace that is what God is whispering to me, what is He whispering to you? Can you stop and rest long enough to hear his words?

God Bless & Happy Lent

Ernie and Detroit

bildeCAPI4JRM Yesterday the City of Detroit mourned the loss of a great man, Ernie Harwell, the voice of summer. Ernie was the broadcast announcer for the Detroit Tigers for years. His voice on the radio meant that summer was here.

As a child I use to listen to Ernie on the radio, to hear the tigers play ball. And to me there was no one else in the world who spoke baseball like Ernie did. His voice, his humor and his love for the sport and the city came through each and every time he was on the air. I never had the privilege of knowing Ernie, that’s what us Detroiters call him, no Mr. Harwell for him, but all the stories I have read or heard, all the articles and reports about him all say the same thing, Ernie was the real deal. His love of life, God, baseball and the city of Detroit was as real as him. He was a perfect example of humility and compassion.

His faith was central to his life, Ernie was a professed Christian, and was not ashamed to admit it to anyone. He brought his faith in to his work, each and every spring Ernie would read a poem “The Voice of the turtle” passage from Song of Solomon:

"For, lo, the winter is past,

the rain is over and gone;

the flowers appear on the earth;

the time of the singing of birds is come,

and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land."

This reading was the mark of summer and all Detroiters would relish the day it was read on the radio. His voice and his style was all his own. Ernie had a way to make you feel comfortable and safe, his voice was like a security blanket for the whole city and for that matter the state as well. All of Michigan will miss this man, a man who was nothing more that a radio broadcaster, husband and father, a man like so many men, yet unlike most. Ernie will be missed, his voice will legendary but his true legacy his his life. One lived with purpose, one walked daily with God and one that I am sure had no regrets.

He was known for his low-key delivery, southern accent (Detroit "Ti-guhs"), and conversational style. Some of his trademark phrases were:

  • "That one is long gone!" (His trademark home run call, with an emphasis on "long")
  • "He stood there like the house by the side of the road, and watched it go by." (After a called strikeout)
  • "Called out for excessive window shopping." (Also after a called strikeout)
  • "It’s two for the price of one!" (After a double play)
  • "A fan from (insert a city) will be taking that ball home today." (When a fan would catch a foul ball)
  • "The Tigers need instant runs." (When the team was behind in the late innings)

Harwell would also begin the first spring training broadcast of each season with a reading from Song of Solomon 2:11-12 (KJV): "For lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; the flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land."[8] (LINK)

May God bless his soul, and look over his family with loving compassion and grace.

God Bless

My little heaven

Garden

Image via Wikipedia

Today I spent the day doing yard work. As a youth I use to hate doing yard work, I never saw the point in it. All the cutting and trimming and planting. All the weeding and seeding. It seemed to never end, from session to session there was always something to do in the yard, be it raking leaves in the fall or shoveling snow in the winter, it was a never ending process. And I truly hated it.

But when I got my own house, and my own yard and my own lawn my attitude shifted a bit. I still hated the work, but not there was a point. Pride! Pride in my house, pride in my lawn pride in my flower gardens. My own little plot of land. My own heaven.

But, as I stated I still hated the work. I am more of a thinker than a get down and dirty type. I would rather spend hours writing a report or researching for a new book or blog than to do yard work. But that too has changed. A few years back I installed a pond in my back yard. I love water, I love the sound of it and I love fish. So a pond sounded perfect to me. So I had one installed. What I failed to understand was the amount of work that it took for the up-keep of the pond. At first I was a little, well lets just say I was upset that my relaxation now turned in to work.

But what I found was that the up-keep, the cleaning and planting and caring for was relaxing. I found myself going to the pond every night with my skimmer to clean off the fallen leaves, I found myself spending the weekend tinkering around my oasis to make it just a tad bit more like heaven. And I hound I loved the work. Not only was I proud of it, I also loved it! What a shocker it was to me, a sworn “I will pay someone else to do that” and now I am “I can do it”. Now don’t misunderstand me, I am not a DIYer, I still believe in allowing the economy to work, to allow the principles of the capitalistic system to do there thing, and I am more than willing to help it out by paying someone to build me a deck or fix my car. But now I am more willing to venture in to the yard and plant a new bush or tree, to transplant this or that. I am more willing to get my hands dirty. This is a far cry from my youth and a giant step from my original pride as a home owner.

Being Catholic is a lot like that, I think. I think most of us go through a growing stage,a stage were something that we once thought we would never do, we are now doing. A stage were a once hard-line fact now becomes a soft edge fact or a once I would never do that becomes a hmm, maybe I will…

For the pat 20 years of my adult life I was a religious education teacher (volunteer), I thought I would never be able to give that up, the love and passion I had for it was like a fire. But the last two or three years of my volunteering I noticed that that fire was a little weaker, a little less burning desire. So last year I did something I thought I would never do, I stopped. Sure it hurt a little and sure I miss the kids, but over all I feel that I did Gods will.

Along the same lines, if you would of asked me ten years ago if I would have written books that are used worldwide or if I would be posting to a blog on an almost daily basis I would have responded with a big fat “I hate to write!” But just look at me now, I currently am posting to a blog, writing curriculum for faith formation and I am still writing the technical training manuals for the company I work for. Funny thing, time is…

God has plans for me, what they are I am not sure, but He has them. Will they include writing or faith formation or will it be down a different road? I do not know, but I do know that for now it seems that writing is a part of my life, as is gardening. So who knows, maybe I will write a book on gardening in your little heaven or maybe I will once again teach. God only knows…

I do know one thing, my love for writing has grown and now I can not see a time in my life when I will not be writing. It seems to be such a part of me now. And in away I can understand that, because in truth my writing is only an extension of my teaching. One I did with the spoken words the other with the written, each offering there own unique quality. But the current buzz I get from writing surpasses the buzz I was getting the last few years from teaching. No I still teach adults in my for pay job, I teach from the books I creates. God is good! I still have my first passion, teaching, and yet He has graced me with yet another, writing.

I am sure my skills are still far off from a Steven King and I am sure my theology needs a little work, no St. Thomas Aquinas am I. But I have notices an improvement over the years, my spelling has improves, it still stinks, but it has improved, mostly thanks to spell checker. I am sure my grammar has and my composition. But I can not judge that for myself, I have always been a poor proof reader, I still am as many of my post prove. I read what I know should be there, and not what is there. So I miss my own mistakes all the time. Some tell me that’s because I don’t think I make mistakes. There may be a little truth in that statement. Not that I am perfect, because I know I am not, but because I do not see them, my mind looks past them when I reread a document I have written. I fill in the missing blanks and assume the rest. What I need is a full time proof reader.

So today was a good day, today I had a chance to work in my heaven, to make it a little bit more heavenly. God truly is good!

God Bless

Lenten Seeds

Holy Mass

Image by P.C. Is2dnt via Flickr

Michigan is a funny state, in a lot of ways. The weather here can change day to day, one day be in the 70’s the next in the 30’s, we cal this spring. Our political climate is about the same, we are, for the most part a conservative people, yet we vote in liberals. This state just don’t know what it wants.

Our faith can be a lot like Michigan, one day we are all about our prayers and the next we forget we are even Catholic. Us humans, we just don’t know what we want.

Today is Michigan is is raining out, not a big rain, just rain. No thunder or heavy down pours, just a light rain. We need it, the grass and flowers need it. Spring is here so soon the flowers will be up and the grass will be needing it’s first cut.  The outside work will began and soon all will look fresh and new. I love spring for that reason. After a long and cold winter, all the muted browns and the lack of flowers and the smell of fresh cut grass makes for a long winter. Spring is welcomed with open arms. Soon I will be outside raking the dead leaves that somehow made it to the first snow fall and setting up the gardens. Ah spring!

Lent is here for us Christians, lent is our spiritual spring. It’s a time for us to open up the door to our soul and allow the fresh air of Easter to enter in to us. Lent is a time for us to clean out our gardens of all the dead leaves of our lives. The leaf of hatred and jealousy or the leaf of pride and contentment. They some how managed to last through the long and hard winter of our souls.

Spring is a time of renewal a time for new growth and to plant the seeds of new and exciting flowers for your garden. Lent offers us the same opportunities, we are encouraged to renew our faith through prayer, alums and sacrifice. The seeds of new growth are plated during the Lenten session, but like a new flower seed, if it is not cared for, given water and the nutrients it needs, it will wither and die.

The sacrifice of the Holy Mass and the reception of the Eucharist are our nutrients we need to care for the new seeds planted during Lent. Gardens need to be weeded and cultivated to allow the good seeds to grow. The same is true for our souls, we need to weed and cultivate our souls to allow the seeds that God has planted to grow. Holly Mass the reception of Holly Communion and the Sacrament of Reconciliation are the tools and means of such work.

Being Catholic takes work, it requires time and effort from us. Lent offers a time for us to all work together as a community. For all of us to share in the struggles of being Catholic.

Sure, we have our hard winters in Michigan and I have my hard winters being Catholic. I know as a life long Michigander that if I wait a second the weather will change, the same is true with my Faith, I know that if I wait a second I to will change.

This Easter

spring Spring is on its way here in lower Michigan. The snow is all gone (I hope, you never know in Michigan) and the temperatures have been pleasant. All good signs that spring is coming.

I love spring, I can open up my windows in the house, I hate that closed in feeling I have a winter long with the windows closed. Sometimes I open them up in the winder, just to get some fresh air in the house. I love the smells of spring, the fresh cut grass, flowers and the new leaves. All have a distenct spring smell.

The other day I was looking around my house at the walls and was thinking, I need to freshen up the color, time to repaint, this too is another sign of spring, when we decide to start our spring cleaning.

And of course Easter is on it’s way, and that means spring is also. We anticipate spring for weeks and months before it’s arrival. We look for any sign that spring is just around the corner, a sunny day or the temperature in the upper 40’s or low 50’s or even a baseball report on the news. Any little thing will get us craving spring even more.

I know for me come January I am done with winter and spring can come anytime after January. But as we know spring has it’s own timing and we are powerless to do anything about it. All we can do is wait, sure we can prepare for it, start to get our spring/summer outfits out, start to plan the weekend yard work and activities, but in truth we are powerless. Spring will come with our with out or preparations.

Lent is much like that, lent will come with or with out us, Easter will happen even if welent don’t prepare for it. Much like spring Lent has it’s unique qualities, the color purple is used in Church, Ashes on our foreheads and palms given out and at Easter Mass the sights and smells of Easter Sunday are strong, the flowers and incents mix and mingle to create a sweet pungent smell that I look forward to each and every year. All are signs that Jesus is resurrected from the dead, that our sins have been forgiven and eternal life has been granted.

All this will happen with or with out our own preparation, just like spring will come with or with out us, so to will the Glory of God. But unlike spring, God invites us along for the journey, to share in the triumph of His Glory. Yet all to often we choose not to journey with Him, we choose to journey alone, hidden from God in our own self indulgence and ignorance of His saving grace.

Easter will happen as it has happen for over two thousands years, this year why not try and journey with Jesus this time. Walk the paths in the garden and smell the smells and hear the sounds. Feel the warm breeze and hear the leaves as they talk to each other saying “Hosanna in the highest” as our Lord wanders past them. Feel the agony of our Lord as he prays to His Father for courage and humility, not for himself but for us, that we may be humble and show courage in the face of persecution for His sake.

This Lent and Easter Stand with our Lord as he stands accused yet silent, offering no defense for is convictions and faith. As He shows us how to stand trial on His behalf. Walk beside our Lord as he stumbles along to His crucifixion carrying the burden of the cross, not his cross but ours that he freely took from us to lighten our yokes. Let us learn from Him how to carry the crosses of our neighbors as we to stumble along the path. Like Simon of Cyrene, let us to pick up the cross a cross that is not ours, and carry it the end.

Passion_Jesus_carrying_cros Like our Blessed Lord, let us too freely offer our lives to the Heavenly Father in sacrifice. Offering out humanity in our humility and reverence to the father who loves us. Let us suffer for the Glory of God upon our cross and like or Lord, let us forgive our persecutors and offer them instead our love.

This Lent and Easter let us feel the nails as they are nailed in to the Blessed hands our our savior. Let us hear the wailing and sobbing of our Blessed Mother as she weeps for her only Son. This Easter let the Resurrection of our Lord not only move the stone covering His tomb but also the stone covering our souls. This Easter let us remove our death garments and replace them with the garment of everlasting life.

The Easter let us truly experience the Passion, Death and Resurrection of our Blessed Lord. Let us journey along side Him.

God Bless

The Passing of George

Yesterday was the one month anniversary of the passing of one of my best friends. He was only 8 years old, still in the prime of his life. George, my friends name, was my dog. Now some people think it’s sill how some (like me) act when a pet passes. But I was devastated, it was like the loss of a family member, my heart was broken.

Death is never easy to understand or deal with, but for some reason the passing of George hit me hard. George was not the first death I had to deal with, over the past four years I have had to deal with at least one death per year, and most have been between Thanksgiving and Christmas. From the passing of my mom to my 23 year old nephew and just recently my nieces best friend who was only 20 years old [she had a brain tumor as a baby, like my niece and it returned].

But George was different, his death took its toll on me.

Why would the death of a pet hit me so hard? Over the past month I have thought about that very thing, George is still very much on my mind, I still have dreams of his death.

George loved water, I discovered this fact when I installed a small preformed pond in my back yard, and George would attempt to swim in it, but it was to small for him. George was a Cairn  Terrier like Toto from the Wizard of Oz. My love for my dogs knows no bounds, so I had a larger pond built for him, so he could swim. He was a very happy dog, he loved to go swimming. He looked forward to summer when it was warm enough to swim. In the winter the pond froze over, but not completely, I have fish and turtles in the pond, so I have a bubbler to keep the water moving in the winter. the ice can be thin, but I never concerned myself with it, George never went on the ice in the winter. But this past February he did, and it was his fatal mistake.

I am not sure what happened or how it happened, but I found George floating in the pond were their was no ice. All I can figure is this; we had a lot of new snow fall, the pond was covered in snow and George did not realize he was walking on the pond, fell in and he must have went under the ice and drowned. George was a good swimmer, he would have gotten out if he could have.

I found him shortly after it happened, with in two hours of his death. I was the one who pulled him out. The image remains in my mind, the image of him floating in the water, on his side…..

I think the reason I am having difficulty with his death is because I was the one responsible for him, he was totally dependent on me, I let him down.

All the other deaths I have had to deal with I had no control over but George is different. I keep telling myself, “if only I would have looked for him sooner” or “If only I put a fence up in the winter to keep him out of the pond” and “If only I never built that pond”.

A lot of “If onlys” a lot of guilt.

In my mind I know that there was nothing I could do, I built the pond for him because he loved it so much and for years he was one happy dog. I would not change that for a moment. But in my heart I still feel the pain of guilt.

Loss is hard but I know that George enjoyed a very happy life, how many people build a home around their dogs? I did, and I will continue to do so. God created animals for humans, we were given the job of protecting them and loving them. Pets are family and George will be missed.

St. Frances received a lot of prayers for George on February 11 for George. I know the teaching of the Church is dogs do not go to heaven, that they had no souls, but I chose to believe that is because no saint or Pope has ever has a pet like mine. I am sure I will find George in heaven swimming in the pond and waiting for me to come back home.

God Bless
