Mother, Daughter and John 15:13


A friend of mine was texting me the other night with issues she was having with her daughter, Mothers Day had come and passed and all she received from her daughter was a text stating Happy Mothers Day. Shallow and cold, I will admit, but not unexpected. The relationship between them has always been a bit strained. Even as a young child, the daughter is now in her 20’s, she was a self-centered child. Looking to always serve her own interest. The blame, as always, lies between the parents and the personality of the child.

Her parents are divorced, I do not know the father, but know the mother well. She holds on to the divorce live a badge, she will not let it go, never have and most likely never will. She is bitter and hurt. For what I do not know, for I only know one side of the story. And as we all know, one side of a two-sided story is never enough. What I do know is the deep roots this divorce has caused. I have known the mother for over 15 years, at one time we dated, and we have remained friends after the break-up. Her lack of ability to let it go causes much pain in her and those around her, this, of course, cause issues with-in the family unit. From what I can tell, based on what I have been told by the mother and the kids, she has two, a boy and girl, the father is not very concerned with rules. He is laid back and not very concerned with structure. Is that the case, I do not know, like I said I have never had the change to meet him. But it is the narrative played out in the kids and mother.

The mother, she is controlling and likes structure, she is deeply emotional and likes lots of affirmations, one could say she is needy.  Is she a bad person, no, I think she has a big heart and means well, but I do think she has a difficult time defining love, to me it seems she places a tangible value on love and fails to see love as intangible. She needs to “see” love, the feeling is not enough.

Sure, I will be the first to admit Love is many things, tangible and intangible, but I will also be the first to admit that Love is not one thing, it’s not seeing over feeling, and Love does not always show it self in the ways we would expect. Sometimes the smallest of acts, a smile at just the right moment, says Love more than the words could ever do, Sometimes, but not Always…

Sometimes that same smile can be spiteful and hurtful… Love is…. What is it?

The bible offers us many passages about love, but the one that came to mind when I was talking to my friend, trying to help her through the latest issue with her daughter was this…

John 15:13

13 Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.

Why this passage of all passages… The Holy Spirit works in odd ways, let me tell you….

Some back ground of the conversations:

As I said, the daughter text her “Happy Mothers Day” her son, who is in Mexico as part of his seminarian training, called her and talked for 2 hours. A drastic difference, but the two kids are as different as night and day, so not unexpected. But back to the issue at hand.

She asked me what I thought of it all, my response, What did you expect from her. Her response, Love. This conversation went on for about 45 minutes (by the way, I hate texting).

She asked for my advice on what she should do, my advice, same as it has been for a few years now, Stop expecting what she will not provide you. Her response, What, I should not expect my daughters love.

Not exactly what I was talking about, I explained that she loves you, but you will never get the response you want, and if you keep setting yourself up for disappointment, that’s what you will always get.

Still no go, her questions, Is it so wrong for a mother to want her child’s love. My response, No, it’s not wrong, but you cannot force anyone to love you in the way you want or need. Love does not force, it does not control and it is not needy. She did not really like that response from me. Sometimes the truth hurts.

But she knows me well, and she knows I always speak my mind and tell it as I see it. No harm was intended and I am sure no harm was done. So she asked for clarification.

My clarifications, We have to learn to accept the love that is offered, not try to change the love to be what we want. This did not help. She still felt that love was a tangible thing.

Her plan of action

The daughter’s birthday is next month, so her plan is to give her daughter a photo of the three of them, the mother and the two kids. Sounds nice, unless you know the daughter, and I do… She will reject this, not because she hates her brother and not because she hates her mother, but she will reject it out of spite. Just to retain the control over her mother. The more she rejects her mom, the more control she has over her. Her mothers need for tangible love is strong, and her mothers need to control is strong (she is a passive aggressive controller).So the rejection of the photo would only lead to the mother feeling hurt and trying to figure out what she can do to earn her daughters love. This, of course, gives the daughter all the power, and the mother none.

My response to the planed gift, Not a good idea. Do not play into her hands. So what than should I do, was her next question.. Text her, Happy Birthday, and offer her a dinner. Leave it at that… She was not happy with that recommendation. Her concern, if the daughter rejects the dinner invite, that would hurt more, and she really wants to give the photo and birthday card.

The real concern, she wants to gain the upper hand, to have control, to tug at her daughter’s heart-strings, and she thinks the family photo will do the trick.

But she is missing the point, the text and dinner offer gives her the control, the daughter would not expect the same treatment she gives her mother. Now some would say I was being childish, but I beg to differ. The response is not meant to hurt, but to level the playing field, to stop setting oneself up for one disappointment after another, to start to accept the kind of love the daughter was offering and to learn that sometimes we must let go.

So this is the point where I offered my bible verse:

13 Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.

The point of the passage was missed on her. But it was too late at night for me to get in to is, so I told her to think on it. She asked me to send her an email explaining it to her, so this post is my response (I will only send her the part concerning the passage, all the above back ground information is for us only…Unless she reads this blog…)

Why did that passage pop into me head as a good passage to use? What was the Holy Spirit leading me to? And how do I explain it? Well here I will try:

When most people read that passage, the first think that comes to mind is Jesus upon the cross, offering up His life for our sins. Offering it up freely… WOW, that is true love and friendship. So most of us think of it as the ultimate act of sacrifice for love and friendship, to offer ones life, and it is, if it is not takes to lightly. We read stories and see it on the news, people placing themselves in danger for a child or a loved one, we even see it being done for total strangers (think Boston Marathon bombing).

The gift of life should never be taken lightly and should never be given lightly. But is that the only way one can lay down ones life for a friend? I think not!

*Parents lay down their life for their children on a daily basis. Not always by risking death, sometimes it is by stand by their child through a sickness or by supporting a child through hard times. The love of a parent knows no bounds. The parent knows that rejection of the love is always a possibility, but it is offered anyway, parents know a child my do something that may go beyond anything they may have ever dreamed their child was capable of (think school shootings), but even than a parent will stand by their child. They may not approve of the child’s actions, they may even be the ones to turn them in to the authorities, but there love for that child does not falter. They are willing to take the mean words offered to them by others who do not understand, that will defend their child even if it means they to are persecuted. This is a death they are willing to undertake for their child. Not a physical death, but yet, it is still a death.

Consider a parent of an addict, they offer help and forgiveness to their child, they take them in and support them, only to have the addiction take over their child, yet again. But they continue to support and make excuse for the child, to shelter them from the crudeness of the world. Thinking that they are helping the child, suffering with the child, only to see the child falter again. This is not laying down ones life, it is protection of ones own life. The child needs to learn how to fail, so they can learn how not to fail. For the parent this means to let the child fail, and in doing so, they to will feel the failures the disappointments and resentment of and from the child. This is a death, but like the death of Jesus, there is a resurrection, a new life.

The new life comes from the child’s understanding that actions have consequences, that the addiction causes pain. But if the parent kept sheltering the child, the pain is always shifted to the parent, the child takes no responsibility for their actions. But by the parent allowing the child to feel the failure the parent is also allowing the child to grow to learn and to experience a new life. And the parent is also allowed to grow, to learn and to experience a new life. This most likely will not happen in tandem with each other, the parent may experience the new life before the child even realizes what has just happened, or the parent may take years to come to terms with the fact that they allowed their child to fail. But in the end, Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends… And a life can be laid down in many ways.

Naked: A Lenten Reflection

 8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the LORD God called to the man, “Where are you?”

10 He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”

11 And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?”

12 The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”

13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”

The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

The story of Adam and Eve, our first parents, is a story often told and one that we all know. God made Adam, than Eve, Eve ate of the fruit and gave it to Adam. God came for His walk in the garden, with Adam and Eve, and Adam and Eve hid… Why, because they were naked…

Naked, meaning nothing to cover them, yes, but no. Naked has a deeper meaning here, the nakedness they felt was manifested on the outside, but was truly on the inside. The shame they felt was not a shame of the body, but a shame of the soul, for they now understood good and evil, they now knew what it was like to sin, and the soul was shamed.

We all are naked before the Lord, for He sees everything, there is nothing He does not know, for He created us and loves us. We are all sinners and we all, at some point feel shame for our actions.

Adam and Eve fashioned fig leaves together to cover their shame, they hid themselves from the sight of God, but God could see them and He questioned them. The first reaction, blame others… Eve the snake, Adam the woman. But who truly sinned, who was truly to blame, Adam, the first man, the first priest. His Church, the garden, under his care, all that God has created. Adam was given guardianship over Gods creation. How do I know this, what makes me say this, God had Adam name all the creatures of earth. To name something is to care for it. We, as parents, name our children, and in doing so, take on the responsibility of caring for and nurturing and protecting that child. Adam was given the same responsibility. God created Eve from Adam, flesh of my flesh blood of my blood, as Adam put it. So Eve was of Adam and of God, but Adam was of God only. Adam was the first priest, his church, the garden, his flock, all of Gods creation. As the priest, he was charged with protection all with in his domain, all of Gods creations, and all within the garden. By allowing the devil to enter into the Garden, Adam had failed, he had fallen asleep at the gate and allowed Eve to be tempted. Adam had sinned.

The nakedness of humanity had started, sin has entered our world and all the lies to cover up our nakedness had become part of our humanity. We may not use fig leafs to cover our nakedness anymore, but we still cover up nerveless.

Stories of priest falling asleep on the job is not just a Adam story, we experience it today. The news stories if Priest abusing their powers, embezzling money and of course the sex scandal. But that is only the Priest we identify, in truth, we Catholics, all of us, are priest (lower case p), by our very Baptism we are priest, profit and  king. We are Adams of our own gardens, and we have dominion over all with in it, our children, pets, family’s and communities. Have we fallen asleep at our gates? Have we let the snake into our gardens? As a fallen race, I would venture to guess the answer is yes, we have allowed the snake in, but have we allowed the snake to tempt us? Once again I would have to say yes, we have, we all have because we all are human and being so means we all have failed, we all have sinned. But now comes the next question, what have you done about it? Have you just allowed the snake to take over or have you worked diligently to exterminate the snake?

The garden of Eden was paradise, but man, in his imperfections, allowed evil to enter within its gates. He allowed it because he allowed his ego to control him actions, his desire to be more than what he is became his downfall and we are still dealing with it today. Our ego is the snake and our lies are the fig leafs and our shame the nakedness.

The Cross of Redemption has opened of the gates of Heaven, but the gates of the Garden of Eden are still locked to us, someplace on earth paradise sits, but we are too vain to see it, our eyes are covered over with our own vanity, that we could not see it even if we were standing in the middle of it. Our inequities blind us to the perfection of Eden and keep us in  a state of nakedness.

Christ, the new Adam, has redeemed us and renewed our priesthood with His body and blood. His suffering was the down payment and His death the price, he purchased our salvation and guaranteed its delivery through His resurrection. Adam came into this world naked, than trough sin covered up his nakedness, Christ died upon the cross naked to defeat the sin that Adam introduced.

Lent offers us a time to expose ourselves before God, to remove the fig leafs and stand naked before our God. A time to ask for forgiveness and a time to receive it. Like Adam, we all have allowed sin to enter into our lives, we all have allowed our ego to control our actions,but unlike Adam we have the promise of salvation. Adam, by covering himself in sin, closed the gated of Heaven to us, but Christ, but uncovering the sin, exposing Himself to our sins, has open the gates of Heaven to us. We must work hard in our gardens to eradicate the snake, to remove it from our gardens to till the soil and plant the seeds of forgiveness and love. Use this Lenten session to do a bit of gardening, attend the Sacrament of Confession, make peace with your soul and tend to your garden.

What is your Focus this Lent?

Were is your focus this Lent? On you or on Jesus. Lent is not about us, it is not about self-improvement, it is about Jesus, it’s about New Birth, it’s about New Life, it’s about New Perseverance and New Death.

New Birth

[ Praise to God for a Living Hope ] Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
1 Peter 1:2-4

As a Christian we are a new creation, but more importantly as a Christian we believe that God became man and was born of woman into our humanity. His birth is the source of our New Birth. Because of a Childs Birth, we now have the opportunity to experience our Birth, our New Birth into Christ’s Church, into His Mystical Body.

Lent is a time for us to reflect upon the New Birth, a time to renew our own vigor and a time to dig deeper into our Birthright.  With out the Birth of Christ, we would have no Resurrection, and without our New Birth into the Mystical Body, we would have no hope or joy, no resurrection of our own.

Now I’m not saying that we, like Christ, will rise from the dead, but we will, with Gods grace upon us, experience a sort of resurrection, one of a New life being born within us. 

New Life

Though we are slaves, our God has not forsaken us in our bondage. He has shown us kindness in the sight of the kings of Persia: He has granted us new life to rebuild the house of our God and repair its ruins, and he has given us a wall of protection in Judah and Jerusalem.
Ezra 9:8-10

We are slaves, slaves of our flesh, slaves of our world and slaves of our sin. Yet we have been promised a New Life, a Life of Milk and Honey, a life of Love and Understanding. Yet we still suffer as Christians, we suffer because we are Christians, because we proclaim our Christianity to all. We suffer more for our convictions than we would if we would denounce or hide them. Or, so we think. Our suffering for the sake of Jesus is our joy, our suffering is our cross.

The Cross of Jesus is the symbol of His suffering and death for our sins, but it is so much more. The Cross is not a sign of defeat, of the end of Death, but a sign of Victory, of the New Life, the Resurrection, the Empty Tomb.The surging’s He suffered, the humiliation and abandonment he endured was not for his sake, but for ours. The Cross is the peace sign of the Christian movement, it is the battle cry of our army and the symbol of our nation. The Cross of Christ is our model, our example our map to the New Life.

Lent offers us the time to examine the Cross of Christ, to feel the wood grain and to touch the blood that drips and runs down its hued sided. Lent offers us the Cross not as a symbol but as a reality.

New Perseverance

Therefore, among God’s churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and trials you are enduring.
2 Thessalonians 1:3-5

We understand perseverance, most of us live it. The Church understands perseverance, she is live proof of it. But we only know of earthly perseverance, Jesus knew of Heavenly perseverance. A perseverance the He taught us on the night He was betrayed. He endured for us and triumphed over for us Death. His perseverance was paramount and divine in nature.

Lent offers us a time to experience perseverance of the Heavenly sort. All we need to do is ask our Heavenly Father for the Grace to preserver and to come through this Lenten session a New Creation. TO allow us to shun temptations and linger in the shadow of the Cross. Heavenly Perseverance is attainable for the asking.

New Death

Yet you sweep people away in the sleep of death— they are like the new grass of the morning:
Psalm 90:4-6

Death, for Christians, is not the end, in-fact, for Christians it is only the beginning. Yet our human nature, our fallen understandings define death as an end. Death, of the flesh is such a death, but death of the spirit, there is no such death, to a Christian. For Christ secured for us, upon that Cross, a New Death, a Death in to New Life. A glorious Death, a welcomed Death a Death of everlasting Life.

Look upon the Cross, see with in it the doorway to eternity. Look into the Cross and see beyond it into the glory of Heaven. The Master calling to his own, the Shepard retrieving His sheep. The Cross is our Doorway and the empty tomb is our passage way, Christ as laid out the plan, the road to eternity has been carved out of Calvary and He awaits our arrival.

Lent is a time to explore that road a little bit closer, a time to enter into the Death of our Lord a little deeper and a time to experience a New Death, a Death of the old ways, the way of Sin, a time to be born again, into Christ.

Focus

So, what is your focus for Lent, is it to stop eating candy or to start walking the road to Calvary?

An Open Letter to all Catholics, to all Americans


Dear Catholics:

clip_image002This Open letter it to all Catholics, be they liberal or conservative, laps or practicing, fallen away or on their way back home to Rome. In-fact this open letter should be shared with non-Catholics, non-Christians and anyone who is concerned about their personal liberty and freedom. This letter is intended to excite you, motivate you and call you to action. This letter is a letter of protest and a letter of compassion; it is written from my heart and shared with the world. It will, undoubtably contain miss-spellings, bad punctuation and grammatical errors. However, what it will not contain is false emotions and lack of integrity. It will be heartfelt and passionate, it will be my personal views and my faith presented for you and for all.

Revelation 3:16
So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.

The above quote is the foundation upon I build my letter. The words of St. John in the book of Revelation needs to be in our hearts and on our minds as we read this letter and internalized. It is the basis of all that I have to say concerning the current state of anti-Catholic, anti-liberty rhetoric coming from Washington DC.

The Obama administration continues their attack on Liberty and Freedom; they continue to erode our rights to religious freedom. The latest being their insistence that Catholic Institutions abandon their core beliefs and offer healthcare benefits that cover birth control, sterilization and abortion causing drugs. This is a direct act against our religious freedom and anti-American. (Source)

We, as Americans, as Catholics as a freedom loving people must stand up, speak out and protest this act of religious bigotry. We, as Catholics, are called to do so, by our very baptism, we have been given the responsibility to stand up for and defend our faith and our Church. Yet, all too often, we fail to do so. If we remain still and quiet the Obama Administration will win, not just the healthcare debate, but even more importantly they clip_image003will the war he and his administration has waged against religious freedoms.

Our right as Americans and our obligations as Catholics are being challenged and we must respond, and we must respond loudly and boldly. This administration is forcing Catholic Charities, Hospitals and Schools to support and pay for treatments that are counter to our faith, counter to our faith structure. This should shock all Americans, not just Catholics. This is an attack on all Freedoms, not just Religious Freedoms. The Founding Fathers would be shocked to their core and the call for Revolution would once again be heard over this great land. The Founding Fathers fought for Freedom and Liberty, the ability for people to choose their Faith and practices it as seen fit by the faith. They fought for less government and more personal responsibility, not for Big Brother and Government intervention into our daily lives. Healthcare is a personal responsibility and one that the government should not be involved in, but that will be saved for another time. Back to this open letter and the attack on our religious freedoms.

Diocese of Lansing Responds to HHS Mandate

These past days have seen a grave error on the part of the federal government, as well as a blessed response from Catholics all across this great state and nation.
By now, all men and women of faith know that the United States Department of Health and Human Services has declared that health benefit plans must include coverage for sterilization, contraception, and abortion-inducing drugs. This unconstitutional and unconscionable mandate is to take effect in stages during 2012 and 2013.
The Catholic Church in the United States will never comply with this mandate. Told that the federal government has allowed a one-year grace period during which the Church can adjust itself to this mandate, Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan of the Archdiocese of New York responded that the Church does not need a year to determine whether it would comply. He is right. In offering this supposed mandate, the federal government misreads the Constitution of the United States. It equally misreads the determination of Catholics.
This nation is built upon the three-legged stool of the First Amendment. Our precious freedoms of religion, speech, and assembly underlie everything this nation is, and everything this nation has ever accomplished. Religious liberty gives the freedom to preach the Truth. And the truth is that pregnancy is not a disease. Nor is the natural fertility of a woman a disease.
Through the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Michigan Catholic Conference, we are exploring a number of options, including litigation and Congressional reform. As these efforts move forward, Catholics should make clear to their elected officials the crucial importance of religious liberty, and they should pray daily for those who have the responsibility for making these decisions.(Source)

God Bless Bishop Boyea for his strong stance, he truly is a Sheppard of his flock, and I for one am proud to know he is in Michigan and at one time was part of the Archdiocese of Detroit. He speaks boldly and strongly, and his statement should be ours, we, as Catholics, will never comply with this mandate. We need to refuse, to protest and to vote with our Catholic heart and sensibility. We need to let Obama and his administration that he cannot, that no politician can dictate the pillars of our faith, that no mortal man can overturn the laws of God! We will not stand for this and we will, we must, fight back!

It is not only Conservatives or Republicans that should be upset, but Liberals and Democrats, this is not going to stop, the power grab will continue if it is not revered. We will see more laws; more directives infringing upon our Liberates and Freedoms enter into the cause of fairness and equality. The forced secularization of Catholic institutions is neither fair nor equal; it is tyranny in its infancy. It is socialism at its birth and will continue to grow unless we, as Americans, stand and fight! It is time that we rejuvenate our revolutionary hearts and stand for what is right.

Please do not miss understand me here, I am not talking about bloodshed, but I am talking about revolution, a change in the current regime and a return to Liberty and the Constitution. This Administration has trampled this document more than any other has; they have no respect for the Founders and see the Constitution as outdated and in-need of an update, The Constitution 2.0, if you will. Obama himself has stated this:

The President said,”…our Founders designed a system that makes it more difficult to bring about change than I would like sometimes.” (Source)

clip_image004Really, the system Obama is referring to is outlined and detailed in the Constitution… Hmm, How dare the Founders limit King Obama’s power to force his radical and leftist views upon Americans. That is exactly what he is doing with the contraceptive healthcare law being enforced upon Catholics. I know some Liberals and pro-abortionist are hailing this as a victory. However, they should be careful not to celebrate too much, because soon the heavy hand of tyranny will crush your freedoms and liberties, as it is ours. Hold your convictions tight, as Americans; we have the right to do so, and an obligation to defend them. However, be careful and de diligent, the road to socialism is paved with many tempting things. Such as forcing all to accept, for the betterment of all, abortion, birth control and serialization. It promises a nation with “free” healthcare and equality that is not only protected by the government but also guaranteed. The temptations of Utopia are many and they shine and glimmer of in the distance, just like fools gold below the waters of injustice. We all want Equality and Liberty, we all strive for Freedom and Fairness, but as we quest for and search for this Utopia, this perfection of Government and men, we often times forget the men to whom we are governing. Our Nation was designed with one concept in mind, that it is man who gives government its power, not government who gives man its Freedoms. We, as a Nation allow the Federal Government the power to withhold Liberties and Freedoms as a payment for protection of our Liberties and Freedoms. We give them the power, not the other way around. Yet they seem to see it differently, The Obama administration seems to see it as they grant us our Freedoms and Liberties, and in doing so, they rightly feel they have the power to remove, to hold ransom, our Liberties and Freedoms. As long as we allow them to feel this way, as long as we do not stand and fight for our Freedoms and Liberties, they will continue to act as if they have the power over us, and not as our Founding Fathers intended, we have the power of them. It is our Government, we created it and we can destroy it or we can restore it! What will it be? This is a defining moment in our history; this is a turning point for our Great Nation. How will we react?

NASA… Our best investment

It has been 25 years since the space shuttle Challenger exploded upon lift-off, and our space program has never truly recovered. After the tragic explosion President Reagan comforted the American public but also pledged to continue with space exploration. With the second space shuttle tragedy President Bush began the process of grounding the shuttles altogether. With only three more flights scheduled, Americas domination in space is set to end. And along with it our investment in our future is also set to end.

Our vision of one day traveling space, the final frontier, like Captain Kirk of the USS Enterprise is becoming a pipe dream. The reality of it ever happening is becoming less and less. America needs NASA and all her innovation, the space program has saved lives made our day-to-day living more pleasurable and is a source of pride for all Americans. 

One of President Obama’s fist acts as President was to reshape and refocus NASA, with the directive to become a quasar diplomatic are of the US government.

 “Bolden: I am here in the region – its sort of the first anniversary of President Barack Obama’s visit to Cairo – and his speech there when he gave what has now become known as Obama’s “Cairo Initiative” where he announced that he wanted this to become a new beginning of the relationship between the United States and the Muslim world. When I became the NASA Administrator – before I became the NASA Administrator – he charged me with three things: One was that he wanted me to re-inspire children to want to get into science and math, that he wanted me to expand our international relationships, and third, and perhaps foremost, he wanted me to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with predominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science, math, and engineering.” (source)

NASA as an outreach to the Muslim world, really, that’s our space program. Yes President Obama also had some ambition that also included space, but the simple fact that NASA is not in public relations with the Muslim world sets a new tone for our space program. One that is not space oriented, but rather one that is diplomatic in nature.

This is a new tone for NASA, one that is as far as you can get from the tone that JFK set for America:

The American space program is part and parcel to American exceptionalism, we must continue to spend time, talent and money in this endeavor. American needs NASA now more than ever, we need something to place our dreams in and we need to see achievements that we once thought were impossible. The Space Program has given us many modern technologies, such as:

1. SATELLITE TELEVISION: Our world would not be the same without the satellites now in orbit around the Earth – all thanks to the space program. They not only give us satellite broadcast television and radio but also power telecommunications including mobile phones and terrestrial TV networks.

2. SAT NAV: The global positioning system on which our in-car navigation systems are based was developed by the US Department of Defense. They would not exist without the space satellites.

3. GOOGLE EARTH: Mapping was never as accurate as the images we can now get thanks to satellites which from space can even see a dog in your back garden.

4. VIRTUAL REALITY: NASA-developed research and advanced technology devices allow users to project themselves into a computer-generated environment. When coupled with a stereo-viewing device and appropriate software, it creates a feeling of actually being there.

5. ARTIFICIAL LIMBS: Prosthetic limbs are not new but advancements in space robotics are being adapted to create more lifelike, functioning limbs.

6. DIALYSIS: Modern machines to do the work of the kidneys – for patients waiting for or unable to have transplants – were developed as a result of a NASA-developed chemical process.

7. MRI AND CAT SCANS: NASA did not invent magnetic resonance imaging but it has contributed to major advances thanks to research into computer enhancement of pictures sent from the moon. Digital image processing has led to enhanced images of human organs.

8. BREAST CANCER SCREENING: A silicon chip originally developed for NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope makes the testing process less painful, less scarring and less expensive than traditional biopsy methods.

9. ULTRASOUND TO ASSESS SKIN DAMAGE: An advanced instrument uses ultrasound technology to assess the depth of burn damage immediately, improving patient treatment and saving lives in serious burn cases.

10. EAR THERMOMETER: Removing the need to use intrusive, mercury-based thermometers on newborn babies and critically ill patients, the ear thermometer uses infrared astronomy technology to measure the amount of energy emitted by the eardrum. This is how NASA measures the temperature of stars and planets.

11. ATTENTION GETTER: Techniques used to measure brain activity in NASA  pilots are being used to improve attention spans for children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

12. ROAD SAFETY: The cutting of grooves in concrete to increase traction was developed to reduce space shuttle accidents on runways. It is now applied to roads and has cut US traffic accidents by 85 per cent.

13. IMPROVED RADIAL TYRES: Goodyear developed a fibrous material five times stronger than steel for NASA to use in parachutes to land the Viking explorers on Mars. They expanded the technology to produce a harder-wearing radial car tire.

14. LANDMINE REMOVAL: Surplus rocket fuel is used for a flare that can burn a hole in the case of a mine and burn away its explosive content.

15. STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS: NASA software engineers have created thousands of computer programs to find imperfections in aerospace structures and components which has proved invaluable in air safety.

16. WATER FILTERS: Water-cleaning technology has existed since the early Fifties but NASA came up with ways to filter it in more extreme situations. The activated charcoal with silver ions used in commercial filter systems cleans the water and kills bacteria.

17. FREEZE-DRIED FOOD: NASA carried out extensive research to reduce the weight of food to be carried on missions. The result was a method for cooking food, freezing it quickly, then slowly heating it in a vacuum chamber to remove the ice crystals. The end product weighs one fifth of the original, while retaining 98 per cent of its nutrition.

18. TEMPER FOAM: NASA developed a soft, high-energy-absorbent padding to improve crash protection in aircraft. Now ?memory foam? is used in mattresses, pillows, military and civilian vehicles, sports safety equipment, amusement park rides, furniture and artificial limbs.

19. SCRATCH-RESISTANT LENSES: A modified version of a process developed by NASA involves coating the lenses with a film of carbon that helps avoid scratches and decreases friction and reduces water spots.

20. RIBBED SWIMSUITS: The swimsuit worn by Olympic sensation Michael Phelps was developed with NASA technology. Aerodynamic research came up with material which give 15 per cent faster speeds than any other swimsuit thanks to small, barely visible grooves that reduce friction and drag.

21. AERODYNAMIC GOLF BALLS: Technology is behind the design of golf balls with 500 dimples in a pattern of 60 triangles which allows the ball to maintain its initial speed longer and produce a more stable flight for better accuracy and distance.

22. ATHLETIC SHOES: Moon-boot material has been incorporated into running shoe midsoles to improve shock absorption and provide better stability and motion control.

23. PERSONAL ALARM SYSTEMS: A pen-sized ultrasonic transmitter used by prison guards, teachers, the elderly and disabled to call for help is based on space technology.

24. SPACE PENS: Most pens depend on gravity to make the ink flow to the ballpoint. The space pen was developed for the gravity-free space environment so that the ink cartridge contains pressurized gas to push the ink towards the ballpoint, so you can write upside down.

25. CORDLESS POWER TOOLS: The household and DIY products firm Black & Decker came up with a portable drill capable of extracting core samples from below the lunar surface during the Apollo missions. The same technology has been used on cordless miniature vacuum cleaners.  (source)

Think cell phone, microwaved dinners and the computer I am using to post this blog. NASA may not have invented all of them, but it is because of NASA and the innovations created for our space program that I am able to post to the net at all.

So instead of looking to high-speed trains as an investment into America, look to NASA. I would consider that to be a nobler investment, and one that would have a far greater impact on American than a train that can get me from Detroit to DC in 1 hour. With NASA fully funded and achievable goals the sky truly is the limit for the American Dream.

Obama makes it look like President Bush shopped at Wal-Mart

In truth I need to write nothing, there is nothing I can really add to this…. But a blog is about writing, so here I go…

President Bush, at the time, was called in to check, rightly so, for spending way to much of our children’s money. But from what I can tell Obama and his administration make President Bush look like a cheep-o …. The money that he and his people has spent has not only dipped into our children’s money, but there children’s also.

In the name of progress and Change we can believe in, Obama has spent our nation into near bankruptcy. The liberals rally call of “Its all free for the taken” has devastated our budget and placed America, the once power house of the economic world, i n peril.  The Chinese government owns most of our debt and at anytime could decide to call in in, for cash, The value of the American dollar is down and the moral of a nation is on shaky ground. The trust of the people in the government, whom we elect to work for us, has shifted to a distrust in a government whom we work for.

The founding Fathers of this great nation must be rolling over in the graves, looking down upon us with grim faces and asking the question that all Americans should be asking themselves “What the hell is going on”.

How did we ever get to a point in our history were we, Americans, felt that the government was meant to support us, to provide for us. Reading the founding documents, I find nothing in them that would indicate that. Reading the founding fathers, or at least starting too, I have found nothing, so far in what I have read, that would support “Big Government” . In-fact I find just the opposite, I find that the framers of America did everything humanly possible to not allow the government to get this big. They did not want a nanny state, they wanted a free society that was able to fend for itself. And a government that was to protect the borders (something Obama must have skipped over) and provide the protection that allows for our liberties. Yet as we see, the government under Obama has grown, making government more, not less, intrusive in our lives.

With ObamCare we now have a government that will decide what health care I have, who I see and even force me to purchase health care, that I, as a free person, may not want. What is next, all Americans must purchase a GM volt, or you will be taxed, and the IRS will look in to if. Sounds far off, but just a little over two years ago I thought the idea of forced insurance and the IRS checking to make sure you have health insurance was far off. So far off, it never even entered my mind, yet here it is, right in the ObamaCare bill, the IRS is the watch dog for forced heath care.

It almost sounds like one of those bad science fiction movie plots. You know the ones, were the government, in order to create a more perfect union, took over the lives of all, even deciding when they should die.  You know, like the movie “Soylent Green”, of “1984”. Scary to think about, but just take a look at that ObamaCare bill, read the 2000 pages, and then look at the above budget again, and ask yourselves “Is it really that hard to believe”. Sadly, no it’s not, but it should be,

America is not supposed to look like this, this is not what the framers set out to create, somewhere along the way we got lost. We got lost in the “New Deal” and the “Great Society” rhetoric that has created a nation of dependent people.  We, the people, are not supposed to be dependent on the government, the government is supposed to be dependent on us, the people. But once again, look at the graphic up top, and ask yourself, who is dependent on whom?

When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

Ok, so here it is, I have been listening to talk radio on the way into work, and the big topic The Arizona law on illegal’s.  The Catholic Bishops seem to think the law is inhuman and some how degrading. The liberal bleeding hearts feel that the law is unjust and takes away the God given rights to enjoy the freedom of America and all she has to offer. And the the conservatives are applauding the law calling for it to be enacted in every sate of the union. This law has stirred up the nation and given the talking heads weeks if not months of material.

For anyone who reads my blog, you already know where I stand, for those who never have read my blog, well you will just have to wait and see. I am going to try to keep my opinion on this until the end. I want to start off with just facts. First, what the law truly states, not what the talking heads want us to hear, second what the Catholic Church truly states, not the opinions of the individuals. And as for the bleeding hearts, well no amount of reasoning will ever make a difference, they don’t like facts they  only like “feelings” so we will not concern ourselves with them to much.

Fact One: The Law:

The law itself only enforces the federal law that is already on the books. The United States of America has a standing law that requires all immigrants to carry papers.The Arizona law only enforces this federal law. The law also gives Arizona officers the right to request papers if they find reasonable cause to question citizenship. Officers in Arizona cannot randomly question anyone, they cannot “profile” anyone. The law is a secondary response, meaning that someone can not be stopped, pulled over or questioned just on a suspicion that they may be illegal. They must first be stopped, pulled over or questions for some other illegal activity, such as speeding. Once the person has been pulled over for speeding the office still needs “reasonable” suspicion to request papers. (Read information here)

 

Fact Two: The Church:

CCC 2241 The more prosperous nations are obliged, to the extent they are able, to welcome the foreigner in search of the security and the means of livelihood which he cannot find in his country of origin. Public authorities should see to it that the natural right is respected that places a guest under the protection of those who receive him.

Political authorities, for the sake of the common good for which they are responsible, may make the exercise of the right to immigrate subject to various juridical conditions, especially with regard to the immigrants’ duties toward their country of adoption. Immigrants are obliged to respect with gratitude the material and spiritual heritage of the country that receives them, to obey its laws and to assist in carrying civic burdens.

Above are the only two facts that truly matters in this debate. My opinion is mine and cannot be enforced upon anyone, your opinion is yours and the same is true. We can debate the morality of the law or of what the church states but we can not and should not allow our opinion override the facts as stated above.

The bleeding heart liberals, both within the Church and outside of it can cry and call foul all day long. They can claim unfair justice, racism and any other  “slander” of the day they like. But what they cannot do is claim that the law, both inside and outside the Church, is not clear. The law of the Church and the law of the land, both, are clear. All are welcome here in the USA, please come and enjoy a better life for yourself, but please respect the law of the land. Immigrate here legally, go through the proper channels, get the proper documentation.

The liberals will cry foul at this, that it is some how degrading to make someone follow the law. If this is they case, lets abolish all laws, why risk degrading anyone. Besides following the law of the land is not degrading, it is respectful.

They, the liberals, will cry, but they are running from an oppressive government.. Fine, than apply for political asylum here in the USA. We have laws and procedures to help out all who come to our shores.

But here is the question of the day….

Why would I want a neighbor or co-worker how feels that they alone are above the law? That they do not need to follow the law of the land because they are not of this land or they have no connection to it? Think about it, if I am here in this land, but according to the law of the land I do not exist, why would I bother to care about her? I will work to change the law of the land to benefit me, the illegal, and not those who are citizens or here legally. We already see this happening, the protesters holding up signs demanding there rights to American benefits! Yet they break our laws to enter this country and refuse to follow the laws once they are here.

I can hear the liberals now.. Not all illegal’s are criminals. Most are hard working people who just want a better life for themselves and there families. And you know what I will agree with most of that. Most are hard working people with families only looking to improve there lot in life, and I say God bless them. But I also say they are criminals, they are here illegally. Most not paying taxies for the services they require and demand.

So what to do?

Looking at each point, reading the documents and researching the issue would be a first step. removing your personal feelings for the moment would be a good step also. Emotions can cloud issues, and facts can be set aside. Doing that will than make you a liberal, facts and liberals do not get along. Well unless the fact was one made up by the liberal to fit there specific need at that specific time. But that’s another issue.

What else can you do, how about get a sense of what true compassion is, true humanitarianism is. Allowing anyone and everyone to enter our country is not and cannot be considered compassion, nor is it humane. Not to them and not to law abiding Americans and legal immigrants.

The influx of illegal’s has caused great strain on your so
cial networks, hospitals and schools. It has created a whole subculture that is anti-American and is a divisive force within our political system. The last election we saw this, both political parties are pandering to the illegal’s. why would they do this… To increate the base… Its all about the vote to them. Do not allow them to trick you, to make you think they are being compassionate, they are not, they are counting future votes. The kids of the illegal will be natural born citizens, able to vote. They offer free health care, free education and most importantly, they are granted immunity to our laws. No you say, what laws are they immune from? How about the law that requires all non-Americans to request entry into our country? Hmm, is that a good enough law for you? In the name of compassion we don’t even require them to learn English, instead we will bend or culture to there’s.

But the liberals will cry, we are all immigrants to the nation. Yes we are, but what does that have to do with it? Nothing, it is now our nation, with laws of it’s own. They then will cry out that they have God given rights under the Constitution of the United States. it’s kind of ironic that the liberals would use the very document they are hell bent on destroying to defend there have baked idea of compassion. Correct me if I am wrong, but the Constitution of the United States of America is to protect the citizens of America from the government of America, not the citizens of other countries. Am i right or am I right?

But if the liberal wants to argue that logic than so be it. Using that logic, that the constitution of for the whole world, not just for citizens of the good old US of A. Great! Now the liberals should shut up about the wars because we are only doing as the constitution tells us, to protect the citizens from the government. In fact I think we need more protection going on…

I am a compassionate person, I do feel sorry for people who want to enter the United States but just can’t. Be it due to money or other reasons. But I do not think that allowing every person free and open access to our country is the compassionate response called for.

How about this…

You apply for entry into the USA, no money, than you can apply for a sponsor, Good law abiding Americans will donate to a fund, freely donate, not taxed forced donations. They are interviewed, a criminal back ground check is done and a drug test along with other medical test are completed. If all goes well and the fund has money you are allowed to enter the country. You must attend English classes and you must report to your assigned rep to show that you are complying with all requirements. You must obtain a job with in 45 days of entry, the rep will assist you in finding job training if needed. You must learn to speak English with in 90 day, etc…

To me this is compassion, as the old saying goes, give a man a fish he eats for a day, teach him to fish he eats for life… I say teach them to fish… That is compassion!

The liberals will say that I am being insensitive to them, that I am treating them like second class citizens. No, not at all, I am helping them gain the tools to survive in America.  I am teaching them to learn the language and culture they chose to enter. To not teach them, to not offer a helping hand would be cruel. To only give hand-outs and not hand-ups is inhumane. And that’s what our current system does, hand-outs. o I look at the liberals as the cruel ones, not the conservatives that want to teach them to be self-sufficient not codependent.

As for what some of our Bishops are saying about all this, well they truly need to read what the Church teaches about this and they need to ask for forgiveness for teaching and leading the flock astray. And the Pope needs to let them know this kind of deception will not be tolerated anymore.

as for the millions currently in this country illegally, do we send them back and make them apply legally or do we create a system of checks and balances to determine the status of each and every person. I’m not sure, but it is somewhere between the two. I think we need to distinguish between illegal’s that are harmful to American and ones that are a positive. criminal records, educational levels and such should all be considered. So what do we do until all this is cleaned up.

Build a wall, hire more guards, use any all means at our disposal to protect our borders. Close all immigration until we have a comprehensive plan to deal with it. Our nation is struggling as it is, and yes I know that our poverty is a life of riches to some entering this great nation. But we must, as a matter of national security and as a matter of humanitarianism, we must fix our own house first before we allow others in to it. The current system is no longer adequate, it need to be updated to a new world, post 9-11.

But I am no expert on such things, so I trust that one day our leaders will do what is right.

The 3 Dots and much more…


It has been sometime between blogs as of late, it seems that I write with the intentions of getting back in to the daily routine of blogging everyday, but never seem to do it, something always seems to get in the way. For example, yesterday was I just had no ideas, the time before was no time before I start working…. All of them excuses to be lazy! That’s all it is, excuses… I can create a million of them if I choose too, and as of late it seems I have chosen too. I have used everyone in the book except  for “The Dog ate it” but I am sure that one will come up next.

The funny thing is, I really enjoy the process of blogging, at first I didn’t, I hated it.  I hate that my mistakes can be seen by all, and knowing how bad I am at spelling, I knew there would be tons of mistakes, not to mention the fact that I love run-on sentences, they pop up everywhere, it’s like I just keep talking and talking and never stop for a breath, in truth that’s the way I talk, so that’s how I write…

I also like to use … (three dots) a lot, to me it represents a pause to think, it’s like a computer that is booting up, the dots represent the process for me, this way I let you know that I am thinking of were to go next with this rambling… Do I continue on with it or do I chance course, and start a new paragraph?

I am sure an English teacher would have a field day with me and my odd ways with the English language. But such is life, in a world were we are politically correct concerning every aspect if life, I feel that I to deserve protection from the cruelty of others for my bad English. Were is the ACLU fighting for my cause, why hasn’t the congress passed laws to protect my right to miss-spell and us bad punctuation? Why do I have to suffer under the voices of correctness?

It seems to me that my blogging has improved my ability to spell and my over all English. This blog has nurtured my ability to write, has given me confidence that I never had before and has allowed me to process my views and thoughts in an open forum. What a truly marvelous thing it is!

The ability to blog has also allowed me to be a tad bit split in my personality, you see I write to blog’s, this one (STATIC Youth) my Catholic voice blog and my more touchy feely blog (You can be new). The You can be new blog allows me the ability to explore more of the mind more of the positive feelings and positive thought process. Allows me to dive in to the project your destiny point of view. Some would call it “New Age”, but in truth it is not, it is based in solid Christian teachings, but with a more secular voice behind it.

Blogs allow me to have several voices, I can be the conservative I am, or if I choose I can play the voice of a liberal, as I see them. Blogging allows me the freedom to be who I am and who I want to be all at the same time. I can cry with out shame and at the same time beat down my foe’s with out anyone the wiser to who I really am. Blogging is the freedom I long for and the responsibility I all to often run from…

In this blog as in my other blog I have often talked about freedom, or as I like to call it Authentic Freedom. To me there is a vast difference between Freedom and Authentic Freedom.  One is more or less what we chose it to be were as the other is our God given gift. Freedom all to often is defined as a human choice, I chose to be free, I choose to do this or that and be dammed with the consequences. That is freedom as humanity defines  her, not as God had intended her to be.

Authentic Freedom, the Freedom God intended for us is a freedom with responsibilities. We are free to love Him [God] or not, we are free to care for our neighbors or not we are free to pursue happiness in Him or to find sadness outside of Him. This is Authentic Freedom a Freedom that will last forever.

Here in the United States of America our founding Fathers understood that, they wrote that in to our Constitution, that all People are free to pursue Happiness (please note that they never guaranteed Happiness, just the ability to pursue it).

[By the way my random capitalization of words is not as random as you may think, I use capitalization as a way of showing importance, so when I capitalize the work Happiness above I did so to inform you that I consider that an important word.]

Happiness is more than just doing as you please, or obtaining pleasure for the moment, Happiness is a life long journey. One that we embark upon as young men and women, in pursuit of the American Dream. But sadly what happens is people confuse Happiness with I’ve got everythingness, or I want everythingess to be happy. It truly is a sad thing to see so many people so truly unhappy. When in truth Happiness is not hidden from us, but rather it is in the wide open. We can see it from every corner and field, we can hear it in the songs of the birds and smell it in the memories of our minds. Happiness is not elusive, we are.

We, as a fallen race, find ways to evade Happiness, we look for ways to cheapen it, to dilute it. Take sex as an example, we have cheapened it to point were sex is nothing more than a way to gain instant gratification, yet we now wonder why our society has lost the ability to love. We have taken the value of humanity and cheapened it to the value of a cup of chemicals, yet we as sickened by all the abortions we see.

We seem to find ways to cheapen our humanity, ways to draw us further from Christ, yet we act surprised when our Happiness is still out of our grasp.

Authentic Happiness is there, we can achieve it, if we truly want to, the problem is most of us do not wish to. We do not want to give up what we perceive as our happiness, yet we want what is truly Happiness, but on our terms…

So what are your term, what are you willing to do to find Authentic Happiness? What are you willing to give up or give in to? It is the question of the ages… One that has been asked since the first human walked this earth, and we all know what Adam did, he too chose what he thought would “feel good” he too chose the instant gratification route.

Nope this isn’t a new question, but it is the pivotal question for all of humanity, and one that can only be answered one person at a time. A few have done it, to one degree or another, St. Francis or Mother Teresa, but most of us are not St. Francis or Mother Teresa, most of us are just plain and simple us.But come to think of it, so were they, St. Francis was just plain and simple Frances and Mother Teresa was just Teresa. So why can’t we to find that Authentic Happiness they did, what did they have that we have not…

Faith

Plane and simple faith, the uncomplicated kind the kind that doesn’t look for the loop holes or the kind that doesn’t try to pigeon hole us, the kind of faith the in-of-itself is Authentic, the faith that comes from God.

Most of us follow a faith that has been corrupted by humanity, mainly ourselves, we try to be over analytical or over educated or over achievers or over this or under that, yet we never try to just let it be, plane and simple faith, as it was meant to be. As Jesus himself said, the faith of a Child is what we need to enter heaven. Note that Jesus did not say the faith of an Doctorate was needed, nope just that of a Child. But all to often we over look this, or we look to deeply in to it, yet a Child is simplistic it it’s love and understanding, there is nothing complex about it. It is adulthood that muddies the water and makes the simplistic complex.

How Jesus must shake his head at us sometimes. I can hear Him talking to His mother “Mom, why are they making it so hard on themselves, can’t they see that it’s not that difficult!”  And Mary would respond with “They are only human, they can’t help it, not everyone was born both God and Man as you were my son, they are slow to learn and even slower to act.”

We are simple creatures that like to complicate the world we live in. It makes us feel superior to others, but mostly to ourselves.
